2020 Year End Wrap Up

As we all know, 2020 has been a tough year for all of us. 2020 was also a blessing in disguise for a lot of us. When the pandemic hit, of course I thought about myself, my family and friends and their well being but as a hip hop enthusiast, writer, and journalist of music and culture, I thought about the music industry. Are artists going to still put out songs and albums? What are they going to do since they cannot tour and perform? All of these questions ran through my mind and I thought to myself, only time will tell. So, I sat back and watched and listened. What I liked most about this year is that, there are some artists and producers who didn’t let the pandemic stop their grind and they had a great year regardless of what the world was/is going through. Although it has been a great year for some artists, there have been no big albums by the superstars; that is one thing that I wish would have happened. Regardless, there are adits who did not stay stagnate because of the pandemic, they adjusted. When I speak of having a good year, that includes, music, relevantly, consistency, and business partnerships. For producers, Hit-Boy, Alchemist, and Harry Fraud, have had a very good year and I might be biased because they are some of my favorite producers. The artists who have had a great year were Megan Tha Stallion, Lil Baby, Drake, City Girls, Pop Smoke, Drake, BLXST, Bino, BluckBucksClan, Lil Durk, Curren$y (honorable mention) . There has also been platforms that have been contributing to the culture like Tiny Desk, ColorsStudios, and Verzuz. These platforms have been producing great content regardless of the situation that the world is in. Radio shows and podcasts has also continued to produce content. I look at 2020 as an experiment for the music industry, I believe that 2021 is going to be a better year for music because we know how to operate in this now normal climate that we are in.
