We as millennial’s have a lot of pressure on us from society and let me make it clear what a millennial is, according to Pew Research Center a millennial is anyone that was born from 1981 to 1996 (22-37 year old’s). There has been talk in the news about how millennial’s are going into debt, they’re lazy, narcissistic, materialistic and prone to jump from job to job. Mine you, I am a millennial and I can say that these characteristic traits are all true. But then there’s the positive things about millennial’s, we are open-minded, more supportive of gay rights and equal rights for minorities, confident, self-expressive, liberal, upbeat and receptive to new ideas and ways of living. I can also tell you that these characteristic are also true.
By having these negative and positive characteristics in oneself, you would probably think of the mental state of a millennial, at least I hope you would. Like I said before, there is a lot of pressure on us from society (there is even more pressure on Black millennial’s but that’s for a whole other article). I feel as though society wants us to be something that we are not or at least something that we are not ready to be. There is a lot of pressure on us to have our shit together before the age of 30 (I’m 24 so I can say this) which consist of having kids, getting married, securing our dream job, being genuinely happy, comfortable and financially stable. In reality, I feel like it is a lot harder for us than any other era to successfully accomplish these things. One major reason is because of the actions of previous eras before us and the economic state that America is in and has been in for a while now. Us as millennial’s have to suffer the consequences.
On the bright side, because of some of the positive characteristics that we have, we will definitely be alright in the long run. As of right now, we need to learn how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, some of the challenges that we go through are out of our hands but others we have the power to change. For example, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Millennial’s will be the largest generation in the workforce by then end of 2015 (which has passed so I’m thinking we have surpassed this statistic in a larger number). I shared this statistic because we are the most influential population that are graduating from college. We have the ability to bring in fresh, new and innovative ideas to the workplace. But let’s not stop there, a lot of us has potential to take it to politics and school administration which we very much need.
Let’s get these old ass people out of the workplace and out of office!
Anyways, we are still young and lively and it is okay to ask for help. We all need help sometimes. It is important that we take care of our mental health, we have a lot of things on our plate and it is hard to save money when you have a lot of bills to pay, I get it. If you are religious, prayer and faith as small as a mustard seed is all you need. Otherwise finding different ways to cope through your hard times is key right now. Meditation, working out, reading, writing, SOCIAL MEDIA BREAKS, whatever works best for you do it.!And one last thing, talk to someone and get all of the emotion off your chest, whether its a friend, partner, professor, mentor, a relative, or professional.
